    Situation

Environmental statistics reveal alarming, on-going increases in carbon emissions and greenhouse gases from landfill sites across the UK. With existing sites predicted to reach full capacity (some estimate by 2012), Garden Organic's sustainable waste management programme is working to reduce the amount of organic waste (household and garden waste) sent to landfill. This is just one of the benefits of the organic approach to food production. A second, equally important benefit is that this is a sustainable way of returning nutrients to the soil – by producing compost to grow more fresh fruit and vegetables. Working in collaboration with local authorities in England and Wales, and in conjunction with county councils and waste partners, we are training and supporting volunteers to become Master Composters. Master Composters encourage people in their local community to start composting at home. They also support people who have already started home composting but who are experiencing difficulties or need that extra bit of encouragement to fulfil their ambitions.
