Most members of the public know that charities need volunteers but do not know the huge variety of opportunities. There is something for everyone! We would like to “fire the imagination” of as many people as possible to make a difference to the lives of others. This event will bring together local charities and voluntary organisations with potential volunteers. A local venue will be hired and people will be invited to call in during the day.

    Situation

There will be representatives from many organisations who explain what they do and the roles for which their volunteers are needed. Members of the public can approach as many or as few as they like for 5 minute information sessions. A bell will be rung every 5 minutes to indicate the visitors must move on to another organisation. This gives everyone a fair chance to speak to as many of the organisations as possible with the opportunity to find something in which they would like to become more involved. We would also have spaces for some of our existing volunteers to give a volunteer’s perspective on what is involved. To make this a success, of course, we need large numbers of members of the public to be calling in. Good advertising is needed. The advertising would need to be in the local press for at least 3 consecutive Fridays, possibly one to be a full page. This would be approx £2500. For costs associated with inviting organisations the estimate is £500. Email would be used mostly but quite a lot of mailing and telephone calls will be needed. The venue, refreshments, staffing, volunteer’s expenses, etc are estimated at £1000. The balance would cover the ongoing costs of follow ups and registering new volunteers. This one event has the potential to help many voluntary groups, organisations, charities and individuals.
