This is an intensive intervention which seeks to equip vulnerable young people who wish to make healthier life choices, the skills, confidence and self belief to do so. The intervention acknowledges that chaotic young people who have expressed an intention to make a healthier choice such as give up smoking or reduce substance misuse often lack the life skills to actually action that intention and get stuck in the status quo. The intervention takes a holistic “mind and body” approach to improving healthy lifestyles in young people.

    Situation

We believe our project assists young people to make positive changes in lifestyle behaviours and feelings, and to engage with education, employment or training and development to improve their life skills with a healthier lifestyle message. The intervention will be led by Xtrax Young Peoples centre but will be delivered by a partnership of agencies including Youth Development service, CRI Children and families’ service, Young Persons Substance misuse worker employed by Action for Change (a local alcohol agency) and School Nursing services. They will be supported organisationally by Pulse - the Hastings Healthy Living Centre. Pulse is a partnership of agencies committed to improving health outcomes for some of the most vulnerable and hard to reach young people in Hastings and Rother. Hastings and Rother PCT is the lead agency for Pulse, and as such fully endorse this programme. We are looking to run this programme twice a year, with the following a financial guidline to each programme. Project Management £2,600 £10ph x 10hrs pw x 26 weeks Residential £7,000 £6,800 Previous cost + 3% (£204) Travel £ 500 Quoted Support Activities & Visits £ 575 Residential Staffing Costs £1,200 3 staff x £100 x 4 nights Specialist skills Staff (TA’s) £2,400 1 @ £1200; 3 @ £400 Promotional & Activity props £ 475 TOTAL: £14,750.00 A simple application process will be used to identify young people who wish to participate. It will be promoted via agencies such as Under 19’s substance misuse service, youth services, Connexions PA’s, Youth Offending Teams, Leaving Care Teams, NCH and many other voluntary and statutory bodies. A set of criteria will be developed to identify the 15 young people most likely to benefit from the intervention. The 15 successful candidates will attend a 5 day residential. The residential will include the usual outdoor team building and confidence building activities. But will also include Transactional Analysis – as a way for young people to begin to understand their own behavior, why they might be stuck in a certain type of behavior and how they might move forward. There will also be sessions around communication & dealing with anger. The final sessions at the residential will begin to look at goal setting – how to get where they want to be, what do they want to change and who can help them to achieve their goals. There will be sufficient staff available at the residential and the follow up to support young people – some of whom may feel distressed and even angry by the some of the emotions that surface as a result of the process. The follow up sessions also further work around goal setting, moving forward, supporting and developing the process of change.
