    Situation

The project supports parents with learning disabilities who are flagged as being a family potentially at risk by Social Services, often at the point of conception. The children of these families do not necessarily have learning disabilities themselves. These parents are given one-to-one support in parenting skills, including child development, hygiene and food preparation. This support is essential in preventing potential unintentional neglect and abuse and supports parents and children remaining together as a family. In 2007, we supported 12 families with this work in being able to effectively care for their children. Some of these families continue to receive on-going support as and when new challenges arise. The project also runs a Parent Support Group for parents who have learning disabilities, which meets weekly. The group is self-run and involves social activities as well as skills learning – for example, IT skills required to make a group leaflet. Interact provides a variety of advocacy, support and information services for adults with learning difficulties along with co-ordinating their views, desires, requirements and complaints. We also run training programmes for both service users and providers. The direction of this work is both proactive and reactive to user requirements and national and local policy changes. Interact is a project governed by Brighton and Hove Community Initiatives (reg. charity no. 1083390). The cost of providing these parent support services is in the region of £2500 per year.
