Expansion and updating of circulation and presentation of an older people's journal for Brighton and Hove, aiming to reach 40% of the city's 50,000 older population. The journal is a vital tool for recruiting members to the Pensioner's Forum, a vocal campaigning organisation that raises issues of concern to older people. An advertising drive will raise revenue to make the journal self-supporting within a year.

    Situation

The Pensioner is published by The Brighton & Hove Coalition of Older People – The Pensioners’ Forum (known as the Pensioners’ Forum), a members’ organisation of people aged over 60. The aim of the Forum is to improve the lives, choices and opportunities of older people and seeks to achieve this by: •Building a mass membership of older people and older people’s organisations. •Acting as a co-ordinating body for older people and older people’s groups in Brighton & Hove. •Campaigning on issues of importance to older people. •Promoting cultural, social and educational opportunities. •Challenging the discrimination some older people experience by concentrating on the things older people can do rather on the things that they cannot do. The Pensioner is the journal of the Pensioners’ Forum. The content and editorial policy reflect and promote the aims and objectives of the Forum. Current funding has now come to an end. The circulation of The Pensioner is 3,000 and we aim to increase this to 6,000 by the end of this year. Ultimately we intend to raise circulation to 10,000, or one in five older people in the city. At the same time we intend to expand the journal to 16 pages to create enough more space for advertising and features. We believe this will provide a sound basis to attract enough regular, specialist advertisers to sustain the journal. Costs The current costs of The Pensioner are around £750 per issue (including postage), or £3,000 per year. Increasing the size to 16 pages with 6,000 distribution would be around £9,000 p.a. We are also planning to enhance the layout and appearance of the journal. We intend the journal to become self-funding after 1 years. I hope you will consider our application and please do not hesitate to contact me if you would like further information about the project.
