    Situation

The Undergraduate ParliaMentors programme (or UP) invites politicians to act as mentors for university students studying in the political field. Mentors will meet at least once a month with a trio of Muslim, Christian, and Jewish students who will be working on a project together. The nature of the project will be decided by the mentors and students. The option will be offered to each group to link with a non faith-based NGO or think tank in order to further promote the action aspect of the programme. Students will be in their second year of a bachelor’s degree in politics or a related subject, and have been offered the chance to enter the UP programme through the relevant university department. Aims: 1. Provide politics students from the Christian, Jewish and Muslim communities with advice and support appropriate for a career in politics. 2. Break down stereotypes and facilitate dialogue and joint working between young people of the three faith communities. 3. Provide the students with purposeful contact with the political world. 4. Give parliamentarians the chance to engage in depth with young people from faith communities. 5. Establish an alumni network of students of the three faiths studying in the political field. 6. Give future leaders the opportunity to understand their role in the political process. The students will take part in an induction for the programme, involving an overview of the different roles a parliamentarian must undertake. Undergraduate ParliaMentors also plans to document the programme on film. This will be an excellent way to disseminate lessons learned and to profile the ‘leaders of the future’ taking part. It will also help raise awareness of some of the issues taken up with the projects, and acknowledge the contribution of the participants. This will take part through a parallel programme called Undergraduate DocuMentors. After the first year of the UP programme, a network of alumni will be launched. Through networking events, the website and newsletters, former participants will be able to take forward the contacts they have built up into their future careers. Furthermore, whilst the relationship between the mentors and students after the programme finishes will largely be their responsibility, networking events and regular contact will enable all parties to maintain the links they have built.
