Women with a learning disability face particular problems that their education and family life often don't equip them to deal with. WOMBB! is working, initially just in Merseyside, to identify and address these problems.

    Situation

In 2008 WOMBB! will be organising a conference for women with learning disabilities. They will be conducting a survey initially to find out the issues that most urgently need to be addressed and the conference speakers and workshops will be organised around these needs. We are expecting sexual health and relationships to be near the top of this list. We are hoping that the results of the workshops at this initial conference will be a useful tool for reform in the way benefits and services are allocated within the Local Authorities on Merseyside. In addition to the workshops there will also be a range of health, fitness, beauty and alternative therapies on offer. There will also be advice on fashion, relationships, education, employment, independent living and travel. If the conference is as successful as it is hoped, the idea will be repeated in successive years, hopefully expanding its remit each time. The group are currently seeking funding for such things as the venue, the publicity materials, the cost of individual workshops/speakers, the cost of therapy sessions, the catering, photography and (hopefully) video coverage and, most importantly, to subsidise delegates who cannot afford to pay a conference fee.
