To provide improved facilities for women of all ages to develop as individuals and as members of families through informal education. Many practical aspects of family life are considered to be the domain of women, but, with the fractured society in which we live, there are often significant gaps in the knowledge of how to provide and maintain a home. At Hazelwood, to support women in this most important of tasks, we deliver both residential and day-time courses; from personal development to parenting classes; widening cultural horizons to nutrition, cookery and fabric care.

    Situation

Hazelwood House is a category B listed building surrounded by the Hazelwood Conservation Area in Govan, Glasgow and is in need of refurbishment to improve residential accommodation and disabled access. The historic building needs, for example, repairs to external stonework, replacement of sash windows, repairs to the roof and internal development to provide warm and attractive en-suite rooms for those attending residential courses. The access and facilities for those who are less able are also in need of updating and improvement. The courses delivered at Hazelwood promote self-confidence, social inclusion and knowledge of the important role women play in families today. They are fun, informal occasions for individual growth and give an opportunity for learning new and different skills. We promote, amongst other things, clubs for schoolgirls which develop qualities including friendship and loyalty; volunteering programmes for University Students to enable them to help underprivileged children both local and international; musical education classes for babies and parents and a course for mums and dads in the art of being good parents. Our most ambitious goal is to deliver a series of seminars in the practical aspects of homecare. The UK currently faces an epidemic of obesity, but there are few places where information and practical training in healthy-eating and nutrition can be acquired by those who are not in the hospitality industry or formal education. At Hazelwood, we want to provide this for all age groups to enable women to have the know-how and confidence to provide healthy, balanced diets for themselves and their families. To do this, the kitchen and laundry facilities are also in need of refurbishment. Dawliffe Hall Educational Foundation has 30 years of experience in this field. This new and exciting project at Hazelwood is the first of its kind in Scotland aimed at women in the context of the family. The total cost of the Regeneration Project will be in the region of £2M.
