    Situation

The Haven receives a large number of referrals from women who have no access to public funds. These women have come to the UK either on temporary work permits, student or spousal visas or perhaps to marry. The ‘no recourse to public funds’ rule means that these women can not claim certain state benefits e.g. housing benefit and income support. Unfortunately these benefits are required to secure a place in a refuge; consequently many women suffering domestic violence are suffering alone, trapped in violence marriages. It is very difficult for refuges like The Haven who are financially pressured to discriminate between who can access support. Any funds will go along way to help supporting these vulnerable women and children.
