We are currently seeking funding towards the costs of replacing Brathay's 15 year old Land Rover, which is no longer sustainable to maintain by currently costing us more to maintain than it is worth. This in turn is placing additional pressure onto our much needed charitable resources. We require a Land Rover to support our charitable work, a fundamental resource in delivering our programmes with disadvantaged children and young people.

    Situation

The key principle of our work is that young people learn by doing. Our programmes involve outdoor challenges using the best of what Cumbria has to offer: lakes, fells and mountains - to help young people discover their strengths, increase their self-esteem, and learn to take responsibility for their actions. The Land Rover is also used for obtaining access to mountain huts for overnight stays. Being able to transport the young people and equipment such as canoes to and from the various sites we use is paramount in providing a very effective learning experience and, for some, the opportunity to develop their leadership skills. Our vehicles are in use whatever the time or weather. Darkness and/or thick mist can significantly add to the challenge and reinforce the learning from these memorable experiences. The total cost of a replacement Land Rover, a fully versatile vehicle which fulfils our requirements is £23,467. We are pleased to confirm we have successfully secured this quote through Land Rover directly at cost price and acheived £15,000 towards our target. We are therefore seeking the shortfall of £8,467.
