    Situation

In our area, evidence shows that over 18,000 pensioners drink beyond generally accepted safe levels. This leads to major social and health costs for the individual older person, their family and the wider community. Existing Alcohol Support Services are not designed to help older people in tackling their excessive alcohol consumption, because public funds are focussed on the higher profile alcohol issues around young people and crime and disorder. Therefore, Age Concern wishes to set up a new Alcohol Advisory Service that meets the specific needs of older people who have a drink problem to offer the following services: • a telephone helpline • an advice and information service • one-to-one counselling • a self help support group, and • signposting to other relevant support services.
