The OneOak project, launched in 2009, aims to bring people closer to the environment and the growing of trees for wood. We are following the full life story of one oak tree: using science, art and practical outdoor activities. The OneOak tree has become Britain's most studied tree.

    Situation

Trees are beautiful and support life. They also support society by producing nature's most versatile product - WOOD. It is no suprise therefore that people love trees and love wood. However, there is little general appreciation that woodlands must be managed to produce wood. The OneOak project aims to guide people to think more deeply about the timber and wood products in their lives and to learn more about sustainable woodland management in the UK.

    Solution

The OneOak project is engaging closely with primary schools to bring children in direct connection with woodland, forest management and wood use. We are using science and art to broaden the scope and interest of the project, and widen its reach to more members of the public. We are working closely with dozens of partners to produce a 100 products from the tree. Exhibitions during 2012 are promoting the project to many ten of thousands of visitors.
