    Situation

In the Toamasina prison in Madagascar children aged 3 to 18 are malnourished and receiving no education. Why are the children in prison? The smallest children are there because their mother has been incarcerated and there is no one else to look after the child. The older children have been accused of petty crime. Many children are innocent. Some stole food or small items in order to survive a life of severe poverty. The children aren't criminal. They are just victims of a very hard life.

    Solution

In consultation with the Prison Director, we have devised a programme that will provide both food and education to these deprived children. Local nuns will run a pre-school creche for the younger children. They need a few toys and drawing materials to stimulate the children. Older children will learn to read, write and grow their own food, improving their skills & nutrition.
