    Situation

Breast cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in women in the UK. One in eight women will develop breast cancer at some time in their lives. Early, accurate diagnosis of cancer is vital for successful treatment. However, patients from Herefordshire do not have access to a screening service that meets current Government Guidelines and have to travel to Bromsgrove for symptomatic assessment and treatment if abnormalities are found.

    Solution

Provision of a Full Field Digital Mammography Unit in Hereford Hospital will give patients access to a full digital screening and assessment service in their area. Images will be much clearer enabling more accurate diagnosis. The convenience of a local service will improve the percentage rate attendance for appointments and, as a result, impact on improved survival rates.
