When you watch The Royal Ballet on stage at the Royal Opera House, you might be surprised to learn that their shoes cost the Company more than £225,000 each year. A principal dancer may use three new pairs of pointe shoes in a demanding full length performance such as Swan Lake, with each pair costing between £30 and £50. Men’s shoes vary widely from production to production, from £15 canvas ‘flats’ to one-off ballet boots costing £300. Making a gift to the Pointe Shoes Appeal, now in its 20th year, is one of the simplest and most practical ways in which you can support The Royal Ballet by helping them to provide the most vital tools of the dancers’ profession.
