    Situation

At present, there is no dedicated facility for haematology patients who need outpatient treatments such as chemotherapy, blood transfusions, platelet transfusions and stem cell collections. Patients are treated in another department of the hospital where clinics are becoming overcrowded. This can cause problems as patients have low immune systems and can be prone to infection. Further, the current treatment area is at the other end of the hospital to the haematology inpatient service.

    Solution

The new outpatient specialist treatment centre will be built next to the inpatient facilities, and the integrated care will vastly improve the patient experience, creating a calming and more comfortable environment for treatment. It will also help to reduce contact with other patients, and reduce the risk of infection. Fundraising started in January 2009 and so far a grand total of £1million has been raised. We need your help to reach our appeal target and make the day case unit a reality.
