    Situation

One in 25 of the population will develop leukaemia, myeloma or lymphoma in their lifetime. Southampton Hospital Charity’s Red & White Appeal aims to create the transplant treatment centre of choice for patients with leukaemia and other blood disorders from Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Wiltshire, Dorset, West Sussex and the Channel Islands. The entire project will cost just over £7 million. £5 million of this has already been secured from the Department of Health. This will fund a brand new extension to the hospital to house state-of-the-art rooms for patients with double-aspect windows and private bathrooms. Southampton Hospital Charity aims to raise an additional £2.2million to complete the improvement project. This will fund a new purpose built Day Case Unit for patients, next to the inpatient services. The benefits of the creation of a new day case unit: ·The environment will be welcoming and an oasis of calm ·Patients will have privacy if they wish and their visits will be a far more dignified experience ·The unit will be co-located with the inpatient facilities, so patients will feel comforted by the fact they are visiting a familiar part of the hospital and will immediately recognise the faces of the medical team ·Nursing staff will no longer need to walk the long distance between departments, so this will help avoid delays ·Patients will meet others with very similar conditions and those who are further down the road to recovery can be a real inspiration to others who are in the early extremely challenging times ·Clinical staff will be able to offer more treatments to patients as day cases, rather than having to admit them as inpatients ·There will be more room and more comfort for patients’ relatives ·Patients will be safe from infection
