To reduce poverty levels among the most vulnerable pastoralists in Uganda and Kenya & to ensure that these communities are at less risk from conflict. The project will seek explicit pledges from governments in both countries to domesticate the African Union (UA) Policy Framework for Pastoralists.

Situation
In both Uganda and Kenya, pastoralists are among the poorest communities and are discriminated against by majority communities and political leaders. Successive government policies have curtailed the rights of pastoralists to use traditional land, which has left many marginalised and impoverished. The impact of climate change and desertification, has led to pastoralists moving cattle beyond traditional pastures. This has resulted in increased conflict over the use of resources.
Solution
The project will push for the adoption and implementation of policies at the national level, to ensure real and substantive change for pastoralists. The initiative will sensitise stakeholders at all levels to the issues facing pastoralists in order for a genuinely pro-pastoralist poverty reduction plan to emerge. Furthermore, it will equip the community with the capacity to deal with conflictual situations.
