Situation

The northeastern provinces which constitute Isaan are Thailand’s poorest region. Drought in summer and floods in the rainy season mean that only one rice harvest is possible each year (where the rest of Thailand manages two). Parents have to seek seasonal work in the towns, leaving their children in the care of elderly relatives barely able to support themselves.

Solution

State education in Thailand is theoretically free, but every year many children never make it to school because their families cannot afford even the cost of school uniforms, exercise books, or transport. Relatively modest annual grants enable children to access the state education to which they are entitled. Substantial grants are made to students in further and higher education.
