Situation

Education is the future. Sponsorship of poor children will enable them the possibility of a real future free from poverty. All the pupils targeted by the project will come from the town of Nazret as well as surrounding villages. Located one hundred kilometres east of the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, Nazret is an area of high deprivation. With no provision for a subsidised or free high quality education, this project of sponsorships offers the only hope for poor young children.

Solution

If pupils do not receive sponsorship then there are two alternatives : a/. for the lucky few, they will attend the local government school in which there are classes of over 80 and teaching is through rote learning. b/. for many, education will be too much of a luxury and thus regardless of age , children will not attend school and simply go to work in the fields or tending cows. There is no compulsory education in Ethiopia.
