Situation

The suddenness and unexpected nature of a road death can result in traumatic, complex and extended grief. Many suffer from symptoms associated with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). These symptoms, unaddressed, can persist for years after the death. Post-crash procedures can aggravate suffering & further re-traumatise families. This complex grief can result in a sense of social isolation as the bereaved can find it difficult to communicate with those who have not had the same experience.

Solution

The Resilience Building Programme is a six-week support programme for those bereaved by crashes. Working in groups with trained facilitators, the programme enables participants to meet with others with similar experiences. Participants gain coping skills to deal with the associated PTSD symptoms, gaining a better understanding of the range of mental and physical symptoms that occur naturally as a reaction to an unnatural death.
