    Situation

War Memorials Trust Small Grants Scheme began in 1998 allocating around £2,500 in its first year. At that time grants were up to a maximum of £250. Since its launch interest in the scheme has grown significantly. In both 2004 and 2005 grant spend reached £18,000. In 2006 the scheme was revised with the maximum grant increased to £1,500 at 50% eligible costs. This led to over £35,000 being allocated. In 2007, with a mid year increase in the maximum grant to £2,500, over £60,000 has been offered. Demand continues to grow and many more projects could be assisted. Recent grant offers include £1,500 towards the repair of stonework on the Hertford cenotaph which is topped with a distinctive hart sculpted in bronze; £110 towards the repair of the wooden war memorial Lychgate in Gwinear, Cornwall; £315 towards the repair of steps surrounding the war memorial cross in Manningford Bruce, Wiltshire and £1,500 towards the installation of floodlights surrounding the Bailiff Bridge war memorial in Yorkshire to afford greater protection to the monument. As these grants show the scheme can support a variety of work across all types of war memorial. And donations of any size can make a significant difference. Further details of projects supported can be found on the Trust’s website (currently under development) or via our Bulletin copies of which can be obtained from the Trust. Donations to the Small Grants Scheme can be made for the whole of the UK or restricted to particular counties or regions of the donor’s preference.
