    Situation

Currently people who have fears or phobias, mild anxiety or depression do not know where to go to seek appropriate help. GPs are often shunned because the general public feel that only medication will be prescribed, or that the waiting list to see an NHS therapist may be as long as 12-18 months. The NACHP's UK Helpline will offer professional clinical advice, undertake an intial assessment and give appropriate referrals to qualified counsellors and therapists within their area that they may consult privately. This Helpline has already been trialled by the NACHP for one year with hundreds of people accessing it. However, the line is staffed by only one person at a time and prevents us from dealing with the heavy demand. We seek to establish a well-staffed and equipped Helpline service akin to Childline. Funding is for equipment, office space and part-time professional operators.
