Literate people are empowered to make choices, take control over their own lives and achieve their full potential. We work with partners like the Premier League and the Football Foundation to use the universal passion for sport in innovative ways, motivating those people at the greatest risk of social exclusion.

    Situation

Our projects work: the children and families who participate are motivated to enjoy reading and learning. Research shows that as well as increasing knowledge, reading for pleasure can grow a better understanding of other cultures, improve communication skills and increase community participation. For example, key initiatives involve: - Family reading groups which partner with their local Premier League Club. Players nominate favourite reads, families receive free books, and the clubs provide incentives ranging from player visits to free tickets. - Storytelling training for football clubs (including first-team players, academy players and coaches). They then lead storytelling sessions with captivated local children in libraries and host a family day at the club. Over the next three years we need your help to reach over 56,000 children and 3,000 adults with our projects and to expand our reach beyond football, encompassing sports like cricket, rugby and the olympics. We need funding of £354,000 each year to help make this happen. Some donations have already been pledged, but we have a shortfall of £105,000 in 2008.
