    Situation

Housing in Sub Saharan Africa is woefully inadequate. Most new houses are built of concrete blocks with tin roofs. They are expensive, hot, noisy and badly designed. Opportunities are being missed to create local employment, learn new skills and retain traditional design features. Build IT International's 'Cool House,' designed in consultation with a women's group in Zambia will cost £3,500. It uses air-cured soil bricks and roof tiles made on site. Rain water is harvested from the roof and the 'bell end' retains the feel of a traditional design. We are partnering a local NGO in Zambia and aim to build at least 10 units in 2009. Thank-you.
