Millions of women and children are disabled each year by maternal causes or in the first years of life. Many of them die. This human tragedy could be dramatically reduced by the provision of straightforward maternity and primary health care.

    Situation

500,000 healthy young women die from pregnancy and childbirth each year and approximately 15 million develop long-term disabilities. Nearly 11 million children die before their 5th birthday; 40% at under a month old. It is no coincidence that most live in the developing world where there is little access to appropriate maternal and primary health care. IMPACT aims to reduce the incidence of death and disability for mothers and children through: * easily accessible Mother and Baby clinics to monitor pregnancies and young children's health and provide remedial measures * training and equipping traditional birth attendants who assist at almost all births in the poorest areas of developing countries * immunisation against Rubella (German Measles) and other potentially disabling diseases * provision of vitamin and mineral supplements to improve nutritional status * treatment for women disabled by fistula as the result of complicated labour Together, these measures can really help to keep women and babies safe during pregnancy, birth and the early years of life.
