We have a passionate belief in the importance of good leadership, as demonstrated by our Patron, Archbishop Tutu, and that the development of leaders in all sectors is vital to the future success of Africa. The Tutu Leadership Programme, run in partnership with Oxford University, is designed to provide a wide range of leadership learning experiences to a select group of young Africans from across the continent who are expected to rise to top leadership positions in the next 5-15 years, to create a network of these future leaders, and encourage them to apply their skills for the betterment of their community. Without good leadership at the top, success is stifled.

    Situation

The programme is a prestige one, aimed at the cream of Africa's future leaders, whether in government, business or civil society, in the age range 25-39. The philosophy is that change and transformation come from the top in any organisation, and greatest mileage in Africa will be gained by nurturing the leadership capabilities of the future leadership cadre. In keeping with the calibre of the candidates, the programme uses world class faculty and speakers drawn from Africa and outside, many of whom donate their time. The broad theme is African leadership in a global context. It is designed specifically for African leaders, incorporating modules in Africa as well as Oxford, reflecting the Africa/Global duality that will be required of future African leaders. Apart from the quality of the training and learning experiences, there are two characteristics of the programme which make it the tremendous success it is. Firstly we insist the "Fellows" initiate or lead a project within their community as part of their Fellowship, and this experience often has a transforming effect upon their own leadership perspective. Secondly, the exchange of experiences within the intimate bond formed in the group is perhaps the most powerful learning experience of the programme, and establishes a network of peers which will last for a long time with very positive benefits for establishing positive leadership traits across the continent. A donation of £100,000 will each year fund three Archbishop Tutu Fellows to attend this prestige 6 month part-time annual programme for three years (9 in total) But through the community projects initiated by the Fellows, this donation immediately reaches a much broader group of people, and in the long term when these Fellows fulfil their potential their impact could be enormous on Africa.
