    Situation

The public face of Toynbee Hall is the Lecture Hall & the Ashbee Hall which visually embody the historical roots of Toynbee Hall’s work for social justice. Despite the Halls being the only part of the original settlement to survive the Blitz and subsequent post-war reconstruction, the upper parts of the building have fallen into disrepair and suffered substantial neglect. Toynbee Hall are now seeking to return the halls to their original purpose and make them inhabitable for a new wave of residential volunteers to renew our grassroots work with the community and restore the building to its former stature, as a beacon for positive social change. Through the scheme, volunteers live onsite and engage in projects for the benefit of the local community. For example, the ‘Our East End’ project saw residential volunteers working with local women and members of the older people day care centre to produce a creative writing publication celebrating diversity. Returning the hall to its former prominence in the topography of the East End will allow it to remain as an enduring monument to the communities and individuals who have passed through Toynbee Hall’s doors over the past century and ensure their contributions to society are remembered.
