Situation
Lack of language and unfamiliarity with UK systems means newcomers are vulnerable to exploitation, unable to access services, and break laws through ignorance. This behaviour often antagonises the host community (which has very limited experience of non-locals) , resulting in tension and mutual hostillity.
Solution
Whilst newcomers' immediate problems resolved, background information in their own language helps them to understand the systems. Their confidence increases as they are encouraged to do things themselkves ( e.g. complete the first page of a form), This is compeltemented by training sessions around specific situations (e.g. maternity)and occasional events provide opportunities for old and new communities to meet and mingle. .
