    Situation

Across India many women suffer discrimination and violence throughout their lives. It is underlined by a common belief that women are fundamentally of less value than men. In India, one-third of women aged 15-49 have experienced physical violence. Moreover, an estimated 43 million female foetuses have been voluntarily aborted in India owing to a strong preference for male children.

    Solution

The 'We Can End All Violence Against Women' campaign was launched in India in 2004 by Oxfam. It raises awareness, changes attitudes of ordinary people and organisations from across the civil spectrum including academics, unions and government agencies who together form the 'We Can India Alliance'. We seek to involve education and government institutions in reducing levels of domestic violence; raising awareness; supporting families; and challenging the culture of gender-selective abortions
