Palliative Care at The Royal Marsden – Horder Ward

We plan to create a haven for terminally ill patients whilst ensuring a world-class level of medical care, through the recreation of Horder Ward. State-of-the-art facilities will reflect & influence modern palliative care, whilst also supporting ongoing research into improved pain & symptom control.

Patients consistently rate Horder Ward staff as excellent. However, the Ward itself is in urgent need of redevelopment to allow staff to provide a more patient-focused service, in a comfortable environment with world class facilities & scope for development. The layout is not conducive to providing appropriate privacy for terminally ill patients, being overcrowded, making inefficient use of space for nursing care & family accommodation & also accommodating some non-palliative care patients.

The Ward redesign has been led by the palliative care team with support from a number of external architects & designers using the best plans & experience from similar ward environments across Europe. This means we can ensure that the new Ward fully meets the functional & emotional requirements of a state-of-the-art facility for the provision of modern palliative care.
