Bowel cancer is the second biggest cancer killer in the UK, but it needn’t be - 9 out of 10 people will survive the disease if diagnosed early. We need to raise the profile of bowel cancer - encourage people to recognise symptoms and undertake screening. Increasing awareness will save lives.

    Situation

Bowel cancer is the second biggest cancer killer in the UK, with over 38,500 people diagnosed and 16,000 dying of the disease every year. One person dies every 30 minutes. A major problem in the UK is late diagnosis of the disease. People appear to feel uncomfortable in discussing the symptoms, are unaware of what they are or if recognised, ignore them and hope they go away.

    Solution

If diagnosed early, bowel cancer is very treatable with a survival rate of over 90%. This is why our health promotion and awareness campaigns are so important. We aim to encourage people to recognise the symptoms of bowel cancer and to act upon their concerns so that they have the best chance of survival.
