Situation

To enable young people to find good employment by taking advantage of increasing opportunity provided by the increase of tourism. At present, almost no-one has the skills to earn money in the growing building and tourism sector, where labour is imported from the city, mainland Tanzania, or even further afield. Lack of skills and training is the bar to bettering the lives of the entire community of a very poor fishing community (pop. 9,000).

Solution

ZAP has already trained 7 young tradesmen at reputable colleges. 2 more are in training, and they will all be taking on apprentices as soon as possible, thus spreading the bank of key skills available. By locating the Jambiani Fundi Workshop in the centre of the village, it will attract custom from a wide catchment area, which will improve the local economy at all levels, providing future opportunities for many poor and underemployed young people.
