The natterjack toad is not only the noisiest amphibian in the UK, it is the rarest too. Alarmingly populations of this charismatic species have declined by an estimated 70% over the last 100 years! This three year project aims to reverse that decline in Cumbria, the natterjacks stronghold.

    Situation

The decline in both actual numbers and populations of natterjacks is directly due to human activities, including changes in weather patterns. They mainly live along the coast in sand dune and upper saltmarsh habitats and, being a pioneer species, can travel quite large distances to exploit new areas. Unfortunately coastal developments, such as golf courses and caravan parks, can directly destroy these areas and act as barriers to dispersal thus fragmenting populations.

    Solution

There are three main aspects to the Project. Firstly, the practical bit: Increasing the number of breeding pools and amount of suitable terrestrial habitat. Secondly, the knowledge bit: Ensuring that all old and new populations are monitored so that we know excatly what is happenning. Then learning from the successes and failures. Thirdly, the communication bit: Raising awareness of natterjacks and other amphibians and reptiles amongst the general public.
