Singing has been shown to have multiple benefits for older people. We would like to open 50 new Silver Song Clubs over the next 4 years and this will enable us to reach over 15 000 isolated and at-risk older people. This bold target requires us to raise an additioanl £60 000 per year.

    Situation

The lives of older people are often blighted by a range of medical conditions and these often lead to isolation and depression. Many older people are reluctant to access support services, either through fear or because they do not wish to feel dependent. As our ability to treat physical conditions improves there is an increase an age related mental health conditions, particularly Alzheimers' and Dementia. These factors lead to low quality of life for many older people.

    Solution

Participation in quality, social and community based singing activities has been linked to lowered use of medication and visits to GPs, reduced social isolation and depression and improved quality of life and optimism. Silver Song Clubs have been independently evaluated and have won a number of national and international awards. This project will allow us to establish groups in 50 new areas over the next four years and improve the lives of older people in those areas.
