1 in 16 women die due to complications from childbirth in Rwanda. This is a devastating number, yet many of these could so easily be avoided through improvements in the level of training and machinery available to the medical professionals already operating within the country.

    Situation

Such high levels of maternal deaths are primarily due to a lack of infrastructure, qualified medical personnel & access to health care. The situation is particularly critical in rural areas, as teaching hospitals and specialists are situated in main cities and there is no distribution of new developments in care such as ultrasound imaging and qualified medical personnel outside capital cities.

    Solution

At MAF we believe strongly in the need to train Rwandan medical professionals so that they can begin to address these problems themselves. However, we recognise that providing the machinery is only effective when coupled with a solid training plan and so we have devised a 3 month training schedule to ensure that the project is successful. Once this is achieved then the newly trained staff can return to their communities with the portable machines, save lives and pass on their knowledge.
