    Situation

Our own use of the sea has impacted on our marine life. Fragile marine habitats have been damaged. Pollution, dredging, trawling, climate change and developments for renewable energy all have detrimental impacts on our marine life. Crabs, lobsters, dolphins, seals and the majestic basking shark – all have been affected. By protecting valuable areas of the seabed, many species that have been lost will return. Our seas have a remarkable capacity to recover, if we give them the chance.

    Solution

The Wildlife Trust has been working hard to help secure new laws to protect our seas. Now we have succeeded, we can really get to work in ensuring that the government meets its 2012 deadline for creating Marine Conservation Zones in our seas. Designating Marine Conservation Zones will create areas where our wildlife can thrive and grow. Over the next two to three years we will make sure our voice is heard so that the Irish Sea has the protection it deserves.
