Situation

The greenhouse is a fine example of Edwardian architecture and has been neglected for many years, leaving the structure in a state of disrepair. The local residents that live within the grounds of The Historic Dockyard Chatham currently to not have access to significant gardening potential. This project provides a unique opportunity to tackle this need and secure the long term future of this magnificent Edwardian structure.

Solution

The Historic Dockyard Chatham has a policy of "restoration through re-use". Put simply, this means that every building we restore and renovate needs to have an appropriate purpose that is in keeping with the historical significance of the building, whilst also modern and relevant to the local community. By providing a community gardening opportunity within the Greenhouse, we are finding an appropriate re-use for this structure that benefits the local community.
