We have a number of families facing childhood cancer in North Wales who are struggling to access support in their area. So, we are launching a pilot satellite project to evaluate the current need in North Wales, with a view to extending our support service in this area.

Situation

With North Wales being such a huge distance from Alder Hey our Welsh families do not have the capacity to attend our support sessions on top of long journeys to hospital. We are also too far away to offer our full support service without impacting services already provided in the North West. We held a Family Information Event in Conwy in April and gained 7 new referrals that day. The event was a great success and confirmed the need for our services in the area.

Solution

Our Family Information Event questionnaire revealed that families are interested in Monthly Saturday sessions, Sibling support, Tutoring, Counselling, Play therapy, Carer breaks, Practical support, and a Listening ear. Our new support worker based in North Wales can raise awareness whilst also visiting and supporting our Welsh families. This will also entail running a monthly Saturday Session where our families can experience the support currently offered but far closer to home.
