The Kibra slum is reputed to be the largest and worst of all the slums in Africa where 750,000 people live in 2.5 square miles without any basic amenities. Children suffer from poverty, malnutrition and neglect. They struggle in state primary schools because families find it difficult to provide uniforms, shoes, books and even feeding. They also lack the social and basic English language skills which are the necessary foundations for a successful education.

At any one time Tusaidie Watoto Nursery School has some 50 children spread across 3 classes with Karibuni paying for teachers, social workers, cooks, caretaker, uniforms, books and meals. Each year we sponsor 17 new children into the Nursery, with a similar number leaving to attend state provided primary schools. Three years at nursery school equip the children with language (lessons at Primary and beyond are taught in English) and other skills necessary to hold their own as they progress.
