The Nabadisha project provides essential education to hundreds of street children in Kolkata, India. We give each child a solid preparatory schooling before integrating them into the main school system. We also encourage parents to send the children to school rather than forced labour by giving free

    Situation

Nabadisha strives to influence street communities to place children into school instead of child labour. Thousands of children grow up without necessary life skills to gain a job, continuing the cycle of exploitation. The street children and police have a volatile relationship at times. Nabadisha schools are strategically placed in police centres in order to foster a good relationship and understanding between police and street children.

    Solution

The project has proved highly successful by placing street children into formal education institutions. Children leave Nabadisha with mathematical and reading skills for the first time. When they have reached a grade level suitable to their age range, we fund their entry into a formal government school. Once admitted, we track their progress and support them in order to prevent any possibility of dropping out.
