Situation
Palestine is a traditional conservative society within which there has been a considerable reluctance for women to disclose their concern over breast cancer and seek early diagnosis. Social stigma is a prevalent issue, & lack of awareness only compounds women's fears. This is driven by a reluctance to be diagnosed by a male doctor & a concern that following mastectomy she will be rejected & her husband would take another wife (under pressure from his family). Empowering women means change.
Solution
Amos Trust supports Al Ahli hospital which provides a much needed breast screening programme for the women of Gaza, the screening service also provides community based education which works with men to break the taboo surrounding breast cancer. The hospital runs malnutrition programs for their children. In the West Bank we work with Holy Land Trust rebuilding demolished homes as well as providing women’s empowerment training courses helping women redefine their future.
