For millions of families across Southern Africa, access to electricity is as distant a prospect as it was decades ago. Harnessing the power of water can provide a sustainable, environmentally-friendly and appropriate solution to communities' need for electricity.

    Situation

For communities living in the remote, rural and mountainous areas of Southern Africa, accessing energy via a central grid is economic and technically challenging for the energy companies, resulting in communities being isolated, without access to quality education and health services and with women, in particular, spending many hours walking to mills to have their maize ground for domestic use and commercial sale.

    Solution

The same terrain and high rainfall, however, provides the answer to giving them energy - harnessing the power of water by using micro-hydro schemes to produce electricity. The project is working with communities to identify suitable areas to site and build micro-hydro schemes and providing training on how to maintain and manage them.
