We wish to start a piece of work with young people living with life-limiting conditions who are one of a number of newer groups who now require our support (49,000 in the UK) and the number of people in this group is growing continuously.

Situation

Caring for a young person with a life-limiting illness is inevitably a huge challenge for parents and siblings. Life-limiting conditions’ is an umbrella term used to describe diseases with no reasonable hope of cure and that will ultimately be fatal. All children diagnosed with a life-limiting condition will share the prognosis of a shortened life expectancy. However, some children will live for only a few weeks or months where as others will live for years and even decades

Solution

The project will initially test a package of support to young people with a life-limiting illness at our Day Therapy Unit. This will mean employing additional specialist staff and some new equipment. During this time, we will closely monitor and review the service. Our learning will then inform our aspirations to be able to deliver the next stage in the project through the provision of relevant care services.
