Situation

Disabled young people and adults are becoming an increasingly disadvantaged group, potentially isolated in the community. This group are significantly less likely to take part in physical activity, which presents a real risk of further health issues. There is also real potential of social issues including isolation. With over 4000 disabled people in Sunderland alone, a group 2.5% less likely to take part in physical activity there is real potential for negative impact on their lives.

Solution

The real issue that young and adult disabled people face is they do not have the opportunity or ability to access physical activity provision, We aim to provide this opportunity through a portfolio of programmes including pan-disability multi sport clubs, family events, workshops and in the young peoples case in school delivery. We also aim to work with wider mainstream schools on disability awareness programmes to grow the understanding of the issues disabled people face
