Today, a young person in the UK is six times less likely to reach a top university if their parents are poor (UCAS 2015). You can change that for disadvantaged young people across England by supporting The Access Project's Big Give campaign to recruit more volunteers and work with more schools.

Situation

If your parents are poor, then you are significantly less likely to get the grades required to reach a top university, or to even apply to a top university. This university access gap has a long-lasting and severe effect for disadvantaged young people: on average, you will earn far less during your lifetime if you don't graduate from a top university. Research suggests that the gap also costs the UK £140bn a year (Sutton Trust 2010).

Solution

You can help young people to transform their life prospects by donating to The Access Project through The Big Give. Each young person who enrols with The Access Project benefits from the time of two mentors: a volunteer tutor and an in-school University Access Officer. The programme works - disadvantaged young people increase their grades and their likelihood of reaching a top university by joining The Access Project.
