    Situation

Since the 1997 introduction of Universal Primary Education, Uganda has experienced massive excess demand for affordable secondary education. After a 20 year rebel insurgency Northern Uganda is now experiencing relative peace and stability but just 7.5% of young people in the district of Kitgum are enrolled in secondary education. On average, a Ugandan earns 28% more in their lifetime when they have a secondary education, so founding schools could help take entire communities out of poverty

    Solution

PEAS will create 3000 affordable secondary school places by launching three sustainably financed schools in Kitgum. Each school will cost just £100,000 to build using donor funding and will run entirely from local revenues including minimal fees, government subsidy and income from agricultural projects. PEAS will use its systems of volunteer placement, financial auditing and professional development grants to support local staff to provide high quality education at an affordable price in Kitgum
