The grade II* Orangery is a unique green oasis in the heart of Wakefield, we are seeking to improve access to the site and animate the space through a programme of creative installations and a young persons programme, reengaging the community with this important historic site.

    Situation

The Orangery has great potential – a delightful space located by the mainline train station – but which historically has been hidden from view and lies below the level of the surrounding city. This has resulted in poor access and visibility. Beam, a visual arts and architecture centre, want to maximize the opportunity presented by the re-development work in the city centre around us to signal our presence and the unique and intriguing gardens at The Orangery.

    Solution

Our project will improve access to the gardens – which historically have been a botanical garden, grave-yard and school – so that all the community can benefit from this tranquil oasis in the city centre. To animate the space during 2011 we will commission a creative response to the setting, a green oasis within a new mixed-use development, and support Wakefield’s aspiration to develop a creative quarter in the city.
