Parents with disabled children who can reach out to others to share their experience provide invaluable support to families who often have nowhere else to turn. They give emotional and practical support, information and help accessing resources to families in their local area.

    Situation

Families with disabled children often feel isolated (socially and/or geographically) and experience feelings of low self esteem and loss of confidence. Many don’t know who to turn to for advice, and have little or no knowledge of supportive groups, forums, services and opportunities in their local area. They face numerous challenges in dealing with poorly coordinated services which often fail to properly understand their needs.

    Solution

Volunteer Parent Reps make a huge difference to the lives of all the families they reach out to. They run workshops and events, offer emotional and practical support by being at the end of a phone, and guide parents to form their own supportive groups together. They use their experience of bringing up a disabled child to help others who are struggling, perhaps with a new diagnosis. They also raise awareness of the needs of families with disabled children with professionals.
