    Situation

Many patients receiving treatment have limited movement and experience considerable pain and discomfort during conventional physiotherapy. Hydrotherapy is medically recognised to be beneficial in providing an additional treatment which reduces pain and increases movement. In the area there is no free hydrotherapy treatment available only private facilities at up to £100 a session. Patients simply can’t afford to pay this amount.

    Solution

The Chilterns MS Centre is providing a hydrotherapy pool at the new Centre due to be completed in early 2012. Physiotherapy in the pool will be delivered in one-to-one sessions for severely disabled and in group sessions for less disabled. A rising floor will make it suitable for children, making access easier for severely disabled people in special wheelchairs. Treatment will help to alleviate symptoms by: improving movement, increasing muscle strength, reducing spasticity, etc.
